The 2005 World Disaster Report produced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies stated that information is as important as food, water and shelter as a form of aid.
"For those people in the mountains, out of reach of physical aid, information might be the only thing we can get to them right now. We can give them advice on things they can do to help themselves. That's what is amazing about mass media broadcasting - it helps people look after themselves. It helps them feel a bit less powerless."
