HIFA Quotation:

It is absolutely sad but what can authors especially from LMIC do when asked to pay almost $3000 for a single publication? We hardly receive grants from our countries for research so where will the money come from?

I recently made some inquiries why Nigeria was not included in the countries granted waivers by Biomed Central and Oxford University Press and the information I got was that Nigeria was not in the range of countries granted such waivers. Reason is that the GDP per Capita in Nigeria was high. I investigated and found it so when compared to our neighboring African countries. So we as people also need to begin to look inwards and begin to promote our local journals and solicit that our governments do more in funding research. These journals also need to stay afloat. Now our local journals are also a big problem. The popular Nigerian journals require you to pay a fee to submit your manuscript for review and if rejected, you lose the money. Is that fare? It certainly depends on who is looking.
